01Where the rank is read from
Apple's App Store app runs search against a public surface. That same surface can be queried from outside for a term, returning the list of apps it would show; your app's position in that list is the rank. None of this requires access to your store account — what's read is the face the store shows every user.
That list stops at 200 results — and Apple does not always fill the ceiling; a typical query comes back with around 186. So the question the measurement can actually answer is not "what position am I" but: am I inside the depth that was read, and if so, where? Storelift prints the depth it actually read for that term.
02Three states that must never share a cell
A keyword-day can end in three different ways, and rendering them identically makes the chart lie:
| State | Meaning | What the chart must show |
|---|---|---|
| Rank 41 | Measured, 41st in the list | A point at 41 |
| Not in the list | Measured, not in the top 200 | A distinct marker — NOT zero |
| Not measured | Request failed: network or store error | A gap — the line breaks |
03Why movement beats the absolute number
App Store results differ per user: language, country, what you've installed before. The rank you see searching from your own phone isn't your rank — it's your rank for you. Outside measurement reads the un-personalized baseline, so it may not match what you see in the store.
That doesn't make the measurement worthless; it changes how you read it. The difference in a number measured the same way every day is reliable. Going from 18th to 9th is a real event. Today's 9 showing up as 11 on your phone is not.
04How many keywords should you track?
Tracking too few is the most common mistake. The 5-6 terms in your name and subtitle are a small slice of search traffic; the volume sits in longer terms nobody thinks of in the first pass.
- Brand terms — your own app name and its common misspellings. If you don't rank first for your own name, your visibility problem isn't ranking.
- Head terms — the 2-3 words that describe the category. Competition peaks here.
- Long-tail terms — not "dream meaning" but "what does dreaming about water mean". Lower volume, higher conversion, reachable.
- Competitor terms — rival app names. Stores rank other apps on brand terms; this is a legitimate channel.
A workable baseline: start with 40-60 terms per app, drop the ones that showed no movement after a month, and add the new ones autocomplete surfaces.
05How to check your App Store keyword rank
- List the keywords. Brand, head, long-tail and competitor terms — 40-60 per app is a workable start.
- Pick the storefronts. Results are read per country; the same keyword in the US and in Turkey are two measurements.
- Read the public search result for each keyword and note your position in it, up to 200.
- Keep the three states apart: a rank, "not in the top 200", and "not measured".
- Repeat daily at the same hour and read the movement, not the single number.
Searching from your own phone skips step 5 and adds personalisation, which is why that number rarely matches a tracked one. The term is defined under rank tracking; the country codes each storefront uses are listed in App Store storefront country codes.
Frequently asked
Do I need App Store Connect access for rank tracking?
Not for rank — what's read is the store's public search result. App Store Connect is only needed for your own account numbers like installs and conversion, and rank can't be read there anyway.
Why top 200? Can't it go deeper?
The public search surface returns at most that many results for a term. A measurement claiming more depth is either estimating from a different source or not telling you its limit.
How often should rank be measured?
Ranks wobble slightly through the day; measuring once a day at the same hour produces a comparable series. Triggering a manual measurement after a metadata change is useful, but re-measuring constantly buys noise.
How do I find out where my app ranks for a keyword on the App Store?
Search the keyword in the storefront you care about and find your app's position in the result list — the public search returns up to 200 results. App Store Connect does not show keyword rank, so it has to be read from the search result.
Why is the rank on my phone different from the tracked rank?
App Store results are personalised by language, country and what you have installed before. A tracker reads the un-personalised result, so the two can differ; the day-to-day movement in the tracked series is the reliable part.
