01The core difference
| App Store (iOS) | Google Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Public search endpoint | Yes | No |
| Measurable depth | Top 200 | Top ~30 |
| Indexed text | Name, subtitle, 100-char keyword field | Name, short description, long description |
| Demand signal from autocomplete | Readable | Not reliably readable |
This table is a limit, not a complaint. On Play, "not ranked" means "not in the top ~30" — your app could sit at 45 and the measurement would not see it.
02How rank is measured
With no official endpoint, measurement relies on the result list Play's own search page returns. That page yields roughly 20-30 apps at a time; the measurement counts position within it.
The consequence: Android ranks are less precise but still comparable. Moving from 12 to 6 inside the top ~30 is a real event. Moving from 45 to 38 is an event the measurement cannot see.
03What to do on the Play side
Where iOS gives you a hidden 100-character keyword field, Play does that job through descriptions — and Play genuinely reads the long one.
- Title (30 chars) — the heaviest field. Brand plus one head term fits; forcing both breaks brand search.
- Short description (80 chars) — indexed and visible in the listing. Stuffing it hurts conversion; one real promise both ranks and gets tapped.
- Long description (4,000 chars) — terms have to appear inside real sentences. Repetition doesn't work on Play and carries policy risk.
04How Google Play rank tracking works, step by step
- Pick the keyword and the country. Rank is read per country, so the same keyword is a separate measurement in each market you sell in.
- Run the search the way Play's own search page does and read the result list it returns — roughly 20–30 apps.
- Record one of three states: your position in that list, "not in the top ~30", or "not measured" when the request failed. The last two must never be drawn as the same thing.
- Repeat once a day at the same hour. A series measured the same way every day is what makes a move from 12 to 6 readable.
- Compare against the listing change. Play publishes metadata changes without an app release, so write down the ranks before you edit the title or descriptions.
The same method on iOS reads up to 200 results, which is why an app can show a rank on the App Store and "not ranked" on Play for the same word. The iOS side is covered in App Store keyword rank tracking; the general term is defined under rank tracking. Storelift runs this daily for Android alongside iOS — see rank tracking.
Frequently asked
Why is there no demand signal on Play?
There is no Play-side source, readable from outside, that corresponds to Apple's autocomplete. Rather than presenting a signal we don't have, that column stays empty on Android.
Isn't the Play Console search terms report enough?
That report shows the traffic you already get and which terms brought it. It cannot show the terms you don't rank for — which is where the growth is. Rank tracking measures exactly that.
How can I be 8th on iOS and "not ranked" on Android for one keyword?
The two stores are separate search engines and don't even index the same fields. On top of that, Android measurement stops at ~30 — "not ranked" can be anywhere from 31 to 200.
How do I track my app's keyword rank on Google Play?
Search the keyword in the country you care about, find your app's position in the result list Play returns, and repeat that at the same hour every day. Play Console does not show keyword rank, so the number has to be read from the search result itself.
How deep does Google Play rank tracking go?
About 30 results. Play's search page returns roughly 20–30 apps at a time and there is no official search endpoint to read further, so "not ranked" on Android means "not in the top ~30". On iOS the depth is 200.
Do Google Play ranks change without a new app release?
Yes, they can. On Play a store-listing change is published without an app release, so a title or description edit can move rank on its own. That is also why the ranks have to be recorded before the edit.
