01Why App Store rankings differ by country
A storefront is the App Store of one country or region, identified by a two-letter country code and a six-digit storefront ID. Ranking is computed per storefront, and almost every input differs between them:
- The competitor set. Apps choose the countries they are available in, so the apps you compete with in Japan are not the ones in Brazil.
- The language of the metadata. Each storefront reads a default localization (and in some storefronts a second one). A term in your English listing is not matched in a storefront that reads German.
- Ratings and reviews. Rating counts shown on the App Store belong to the storefront, so an app with a large US rating base can start near zero elsewhere.
- What people type. Demand is local; a term with plenty of autocomplete suggestions in one country may produce none in another.
Codes and IDs for all 175 storefronts we measure are in App Store storefront country codes.
02App Store top charts by country
Top charts are per storefront as well. Apple publishes top free, top paid and top grossing lists for each country, overall and per category, in public RSS feeds that return at most 100 rows per list. Search rank and chart rank are separate: chart position reflects the category, search rank reflects a single term.
Our App Store top charts pages are those lists read directly from Apple: the United States (/charts/us/), Turkey (/charts/tr/) and Germany (/charts/de/), 10 categories each, free, paid and grossing — 90 lists. The chart volatility page shows which of them changed most since the previous reading.
03How to check your app's rank in another country
- Find the storefront's country code — for example
gbfor the United Kingdom, notuk. - Search the term in that storefront. On a device this means an Apple Account set to that country; on the web the country code sits in the App Store link (
apps.apple.com/gb/…). - Count your position in the results. The App Store also personalizes, so the result on your own phone may not match a clean reading.
The free rank check does step 2 and 3 for you: paste an App Store or Google Play link, a term and a country, and it reads the un-personalized result for that storefront. For daily tracking across countries, Storelift reads rank to the top 200 on iOS and about 30 on Google Play in each of 175 storefronts — see App Store keyword rank tracking.
04Google Play rankings by country
Google Play also ranks per country: the listing text can be localized per language and availability is set per country. Measured search depth on Play is shallower — about 30 results in our readings — so "not ranked" on Play means "not in the top ~30", not "not in the top 200". Details in Google Play rank tracking.
05What to do with country-level rankings
- Pick countries by gap, not by size. A storefront where the top-10 wall for your terms is low is easier to rank in than a large one where it is high.
- Localize the metadata the storefront reads. Translation alone keeps the wrong words; each country needs its own keyword research — see ASO localization.
- Compare a country with itself over time. Ranks in two storefronts rest on different competitors and different demand; movement inside one storefront is the reliable signal.
For which language each storefront reads by default, the free storefront languages tool lists all of them; a listing written in a language no storefront in your target market reads earns no rank there, however well it is written.
Frequently asked
Are App Store rankings different in each country?
Yes. Every country or region is a separate storefront with its own search results, top charts, competitors and ratings, so an app's rank for the same term can differ widely between countries.
How do I see App Store top charts by country?
Apple publishes top free, paid and grossing charts per storefront. Our top charts pages show them for the US, Turkey and Germany in 10 categories each, read from Apple's public feeds.
How can I check my app's ranking in another country?
Search the term in that country's storefront, or use the free rank check with your app link, the term and the country code.
What are the top apps in the US App Store?
The current top free, paid and grossing lists for the United States, overall and by category, are on App Store top charts: United States.
Is there a worldwide App Store top chart?
Apple publishes charts per storefront, not a worldwide list. Anything labelled worldwide is an aggregation made by whoever built it.
Why does my app rank in one country but not in another?
Usually because the storefront reads a different localization, the competitors there are different, or your ratings in that country are few. Check which language the storefront indexes first: a term that isn't in the localization it reads can't be matched there.
