01How many are required, how many fit
| App Store | Google Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1 | 2 — across different device types |
| Maximum | 10 | 8 per device type |
| File format | .jpeg / .jpg / .png, no alpha channel | JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no alpha channel |
02Size and resolution
App Store has a separate resolution per device size (1260×2736 for 6.9", 1284×2778 for 6.5", 1170×2532 for 6.1", and so on) — but you don't have to upload every size by hand: Apple fills a missing size by SCALING from a larger one (a missing 6.9" is scaled up from 6.5"). If your app runs on iPad, a 13" screenshot is required; the same scaling rule applies there too.
Google Play runs one rule set instead: the shortest side must be at least 320px, the longest at most 3,840px, and the longest side CANNOT exceed twice the shortest side. The recommended aspect ratio for standard devices is 16:9 for landscape (min 1920×1080) and 9:16 for portrait (min 1080×1920).
03The first few frames are weighted for a real, checkable reason
The claim that the first screenshots get seen more is usually presented as design advice in ASO content; the measurable part is this: App Store's own listing preview and search-result row show a limited number of frames before scrolling, and the rest aren't visible without it. That's the CHECKABLE reason behind "put your strongest message in the first three frames" — not taste, the store's own interface constraint.
Frequently asked
Do I need to upload a screenshot for every iPhone size?
No. Apple fills a missing size by scaling from a larger one you did provide (a missing 6.9" is scaled up from 6.5"). Only the size required for the platform your app runs on (iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and so on) is mandatory — the rest can be left to scale.
What's the minimum number of screenshots Google Play requires?
Two — across different device types. Uploading two screenshots for a single device type doesn't satisfy this requirement.
Does Storelift measure screenshot quality?
No. Storelift only measures rank, demand and competitors; it doesn't run screenshot A/B tests or design scoring. This page is limited to the numbers written in each store's own technical documentation.
