en-GB is the default search language in 40 of the 128 App Store storefronts we measure — 31% of them. Metadata written once in en-GB is what search reads in every one of them, so the cost of that text is amortised across 40 markets rather than one.

Of the 42 language slots across the 128 storefronts, en-GB is the widest widest. The widest is en-GB at 40 storefronts; 29 slots reach exactly one storefront each, where the same translation work buys a single market instead of 40.

Each of these 40 rows was verified against three Apple endpoints: the storefront ID returns suggestions, search returns results in that country, and Apple accepts the language code. Two storefronts that failed were dropped rather than listed.

NOTE: Default is not the only language. Apple can index more than one language in a storefront; this list is the language each storefront's search reads by default. It answers “where does this text land”, not “which languages are indexed here”.
